Triumph GT6 Mark 2
Production : 12,066
Dates : 1968 to 1970
The handling of the original GT6 was so bad that Triumph had to respond quickly. The revised rear suspension of the Vitesse MkII with double-jointed half shafts (connected via a rubber "donut") and transverse leaf spring acting as top wishbones, was grafted on. This transformed the car but should have been done in the first place and, as a result, all GT6s have the reputation of the Mark I clinging to them. Power was increased to 105bhp by using the better flowing cylinder head of the TR5, which meant 112mph/180mph and brisker acceleration (0-60mph in 10.1 seconds) in European specification cars, while American cars underwent the usual strangulation of the period (in the name of emissions), which meant 95bhp (the same as the Mark I) and the car was badged the GT6+. Like the contemporary Spitfire, the GT6 had a higher front bumper and also improved cockpit trim and a decent ventilation system, making this the best of all the GT6s. Wire wheels, optional rear seat (if you'd got very small children !) and overdrive continued to be listed as options.
